Western and Southern Open: Update Semifinals

Western and Southern  Open Draw

Action continues in the Western and Southern Open today in the semifinals for the Men's and Women's Singles draws. All semifinal singles matches will be on Center Court today.


Kiki Bertens defeats (8) Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2

In a match that saw 12 combined break points, Kiki Bertens upset the 8 seeded Petra Kvitova to reach her first hardcourt singles final. Bertens had 7 break points in route to victory. For Bertens it's her 9th victory over a ranked opponent this year and her 3rd in this tournament. Next up for Bertens is n the 1 seed Simona Halep. For Kvitova its  on to New Haven, Connecticut with a matchup against Agnieszka Radwanska in the Conneticut Open.

(10) Novak Djokovic defeats (7) Marin Cilic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3

In a thrilling 3 set match, Novak Djokovic defeat Marin Cilic to move on to his 6th Western and Southern Open final. Dojokovic has never won this tournament, and it is the only major tournament he has not won. He will seek the title against the 2 seed Roger Federer. For Cilic, it is on to New York to prepare for the US Open.

(1) Simona Halep defeats Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-4

Simona Halep continued her recent dominance with a win over Aryna Sabalenka. Halep, who last weekend won the Rogers Cup in Toronto moves on to face Kiki Bertens in the finals tomorrow afternoon. Haleps performance in Cincinnati guarantees she will maintain her number 1 ranking into the US Open. Sabalenka will move on to New Haven and the Connecticut Open where she will play a qualifier still to be named.

(2) Roger Federer defeats (11) David Goffin 7-6 (3), 1-1 (Goffin Retires)

Roger Federer moved on to the Western and Southern Open Final, after opponent David Goffin retired early in the second set due to an injury. Federer advances to his 8th final in Cincinnati. He is 7-0 in Western and Open finals. Federer will play Novak Djokovic. David Goffin was scheduled to compete in the ATP 250 tournament in Winston Salem, North Carolina. His status for that tournament is now uncertain.
