Nationals 5 Reds 2
Rookie James Woods belted a 2-out, 3-run opposite field homer off Justin Wilson in the 8th inning to complete a sweep of the Reds. Wilson had entered the game for Lucas Sims.
The Reds wasted a solid start by Andrew Abbott, in dropping a fourth consecutive game and falling to 47-53 on the season. The defense allowed two unearned runs in the process. It’s their first time swept in D.C. since 2015.
Abbott: 6.2 IN, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 103 pitches/68 strikes. ERA 3.19.
Bullpen:
Sims 1 IN, 2 R. Finished 7th, back out for 8th and got the first two outs.
Wilson: HR. Entered w/ 2 out, 2 out 8th. He took the loss in Saturday's’ game, allowing a tie breaking RBI 1B in the 8th.
Offense: 5 H, 1 BB, 9 K.
Nationals SP Jake Irvin: 7 IN, 0 BB, 7 K, 2 R, 2 HR. Previous 2 starts/10 IN/18 H/12 ER.
Noelvi Marte: HR
Stuart Fairchild: HR. Nice catch into the wall in CF.
Elly: 2B to extend hit streak to nine games BB, SB (48).
Jeimer Candelario: 0 for 12 in series, 0 for 16, overall.
Will Benson: Heck of a backhanded, full extension, sliding catch of a rocket (109 mph) in LF. Then a hard charging sliding catch.
Mistakes: Reds D had a runner picked off 3rd, but Austin Wynn’s throw was dropped/deflected off Noelvi Marte’s glove and a run scored. It extended the inning for an RBI single and a second run. Elly doubled to open the 6th but was then tagged out attempting to advance to 3rd on a grounder to SS he had to leap over. That came on a 3 and 0 swing by Candelario…who was hitless in the series.
I’d find it hard to believe there has been a more fundamentally inept Reds team in my lifetime. The lack of situational awareness and execution is staggering.
How they scored:
2nd: Marte HR, 1-0 Reds
5th: Fairchild HR, 2-2 Reds
