Frank Montas deserved better as the Reds wasted another strong start. He allowed just one earned run over six innings in his return from the IL. But reigning NL Rookie of the Year Corbin Carroll, who entered the night batting .201 with 1 HR and 7 RBI, had 3 hits, a homer, and tied a career high with 5 RBI.
The Reds have dropped six straight games. They have been outscored 34-10 during the skid. They plunge to 16-19 and have lost 9 of 11.
Notes:
Offense: 3 H, 4 BB, 7 K. Jonathan India broke up the shutout bid with a solo blast in the 7th. Tyler Stephenson added a 9th inning solo shot. Zac Gallen: 6 IN, 0 R....he got 16 called strikes. ERA drops to 2.84. The Reds have managed two runs vs opponent's starting pitchers over the last 36.2 innings/6 games.
Montas: 6 IN, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K (season high), 87 pitches/61 strikes.
Retired first six batters before allowing a 3rd inning run....for some reason didn't throw home on a 1st & 3rd chopper back to the mound, but opted for force at 2nd. 55 pitches through four. Hit 99 mph early on. Had averaged 93+ previous two starts. Averages 94.5 for season. 1st pitch strike to 17 of 24 batters.
Reds starting rotation ERA dips to 3.68. All five starters have a sub 4.00 ERA. A year ago the rotation ERA was 5.43.

TJ Friedl made his season debut after missing 34 games with a broken wrist: 0-4, K

E-Elly: He's 6 for his last 39. His 5th inning error (7) led to an unearned run. Later, he went crashing headlong into the stands in an unsuccessful effort to haul in a foul ball. He fist bumped a youngster as he climbed out.
