Montas exits early, bullpen stars, Reds win, sweep Angels

Reds 3 Angels 0

Quick Cap:

A day that started with chaos, turned into one of the finest Reds bullpen performances….EVER…,and a huuuuuge win. Frankie Montas was forced to leave three batters into the game when he took a liner (101 mph) off his right forearm. Five Reds relievers then combined to allow 0 runs over the final 8.1 innings. How about David Bell piecing that one together?

The Reds were no-hit into a scoreless 6th inning before an error opened the door to a CES 2-out double. That’s a series sweep and eight straight wins vs the Angels. The Reds are now 12-9.

India and Fraley were not in the lineup because of illnesses.

Elly: 2 H, BB, R. His infield single with one out in the 6th broke up Jose Soriano’s no-hit bid. The adjustments he continues to make are pretty impressive. Not just game to game, but pitch to pitch.

CES 2-RBI 2B and two nice D picks: one took a hit away from Mike Trout, another started a 3-6-3 DP.

Candelario: 2 H, HBP. He started a heck of an around the horn DP w/ Santiago Espinal.

Mike Trout 1 for 12 in the series. Sims got him to pop up in 11 pitch AB. He entered the series as AL HR leader (8).

Frankie Montas: 0.2. X-rays revealed NO fracture. Aaron Hicks (.152) drew a 10 pitch BB to open the game.

Bullpen: 8.1 innings. 0 runs. Wow.
Suter: The emergency call with 2 outs in the 1st. 2.2 IN, 51 pitches.
Pagan: 2 IN, 22 pitches.
Cruz: 1 IN
Sims: 1 IN. 29 pitches.
Diaz: 1 IN

That’s two shutouts over the last eight days.

How they scored:
6th: CES 2-out, 2-run double on 0 and 2 pitch, 2-0 Reds
6th: Candelario RBI 2B, 3-0 Reds

Espinal struck out attempting to bunt w/ two outs in the 6th. A .128 hitting backup middle infielder that can’t bunt.

Benson: 0-4, 3 K. He’s 0 for his last 16. Team high 30 K in 80 PA.

Tomorrow: Reds open four game series vs Phillies at GABP. The Reds will need some innings from Hunter Greene. They won’t have Martinez, Suter or Sims to use.
