Brewers 9 Reds 5
Quick Cap: Frankie Montas didn’t have it early, never really found it, and the Reds bats were handled by a guy named Joe Ross as the Brewers evened the series with a 9-5 win. Trailing 9-1 in the 7th, the Reds added two runs in the 7th and two more in the 8th to make things more interesting. The tying run was on deck with 0 outs in the 9th. But Will Benson, CES and Jeimer Candelario each struck out to end it. The Reds struck out 12 more times on the night.
Frankie Montas: 5 IN, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 96 pitches/61 strikes. Allowed one run in his first two starts. 3rd inning: 36 pitches, three runs, lost four batters he had two strikes on, BB, 2B, 1B, 1B. 64 pitches/three innings. Carson Spiers warmed in 3rd.
Spiers: 4 IN, 3 ER. Those are four huge innings for the Reds pen the next two days. The Reds didn't anticipate a 9-1 blowout situation when they called him up Monday to take the place of Tejay Antone, but Spiers was the perfect fit. He last pitched Thursday and had pitches to give. At 81 pitches, he’s a dead roster spot for the next couple of days. I’d think he goes back down tomorrow.
Ross: making his 2nd ML appearance since 2021, 6.1 IN, 2 ER, 7 K. He took the ‘20 Covid year off and didn’t pitch in MLB 2022-2023 with injuries.
D: Elly’s potential DP throwing error that should be changed to India error (drop) led to two unearned runs in 5th. Brewers scored 3 unearned runs.
Breezy: Reds 7 K first 4 innings….12 total.
