Oh, what a shot in the arm for the Reds. Oh, what a shot of confidence for Connor Phillips!
The 22-year-old Phillips fired seven excellent and much needed innings, allowing just three hits and two runs, as the Reds beat the 1st place Twins 7-3 Monday night at GABP. They have won 6 of their last 8 games.
The Marlins lost to the Mets. The Cubs and Reds are tied for the 3rd Wild Card spot.
Phillips was backed by a homer and three RBI by Will Benson, two hits and two RBI by Joey Votto and three hits and an RBI by Spencer Steer vs his former organization.
The Reds moved to 79-73 on the season with 10 games remaining. The Twins became the 28th* different team the Reds have beaten this season. The Reds are 27-15 in inter-league play this season.
Phillips: He was dynamite in recording his first ML win in his 3rd ML start. 7 IN, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K, 2 HR, 93 pitches, He didn’t surrender a hit until a Royce Lewis long ball to start the 4th inning. He allowed another solo shot to Alex Kirilloff in the 7th. He ended the 7th with back-to-back strikeouts and bounced off the mound to cheers from the GABP crowd. He’s the first Reds pitcher since Aug. 22 to go seven innings.
Benson 3 RBI: He was robbed of a homer by Twins CF Michael Taylor in the 2nd inning that went for a sac fly. He then hit one over Taylor for a HR in the 5th inning.
Steer: 3 H, 2B, R, RBI.
Votto: 2 H, 2 RBI, R. The two-run 7th inning 1B came off a LH. He’s 4 for his last 8.
