Reds 5 Giants 1

Rookie Andrew Abbott tossed eight spectacular innings of 1-hit, shutout baseball as the Reds beat the Giants 5-1 Thursday afternoon at GABP. After dropping the first two games of the series, the Reds scrambled back with consecutive wins to gain a split in the four game series.

Luke Maile got the Reds offense off and scoring when he delivered the game's first hit in the 3rd inning, a colossal 423-foot two run blast to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. They scored in the 3rd-4th-5th innings.

Abbott: 8 IN, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 106 pitches/65 strikes. He retired the final 12 batters. It's the longest outing of the season by a Reds pitcher. The only hit allowed came with two outs into the 4th. I’ll say it again: I love the matter-of-fact, business like, I’ll do my job, you do yours and we’ll go home winners approach by Abbott. His ERA dips to 2.10.

Finishing up: Derek Law handled the 9th and served up a solo homer to, of course, Wilmer Flores.

Getting offensive: The Reds pounded out 12 hits. Jonathan India 2 H, 2B, RBI......Jake Fraley 2 H, 2B.....Elly H, BB

Length in the Lineup: The bottom three in the Reds order (CES-Benson-Maile) 6 H, 2 2B, HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB, SB.
CES: H, R, RBI
Benson: 2 H, 2 2B, R, RBI, BB, SB
Maile: 3 H, HR, 2 RBI

Career high: Maile's HR was his career high 4th.....HR by season: 3-2-3-2-0-3--4.

Relay it! The Reds cut down Wilmer Flores at the plate to end the 4th inning on a throw from Benson to Elly to Maile. It wasn't close.
Elly's throw home was clocked at 99.8 mph, but was off the mark. Maile made a nice play to swipe tag. That's the fastest throw by a fielder in the Statcast era (2015).

Outs on the bases: 4
-Elly walked to start the game but was thrown out stealing
-In the 4th, with runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs, Friedl grounded to 2B. Elly ran through 2B on the attempted force (safe) and kept running to 3rd.
Maile, forced to go home, was tagged out.
-Benson was out at the plate on an infield grounder to 1B with one out and runners on the corners.
-Votto out at 2B attempting to advance on a ball in the dirt.

How the Reds scored:
3rd Maile 2-run HR, 2-0 Reds
4th: CES RBI 1B scored India (2B), 3-0 Reds
4th: Benson RBI 2B scored CES, 4-0 Reds
5th: India RBI 1B plates Fraley, 5-0 Reds
