Brewers 4 Reds 3

The Reds scored. The Reds led 3-2 into the 8th. But the Reds lost and got swept. They were messy in doing it.

The Reds have dropped four straight games, having allowed a total of nine runs.

The Reds are now two games back of first place and 2-8 vs the team ahead of them.

A run! The scoreless streak ended at 28 innings when Joey Votto delivered a bolt to the gap to score Jonathan India (1B) for a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning.

Jake Rake: Jake Fraley clubbed a two-run HR that broke a 1-1 game in the 3rd.

Poor: Tom Emanski would have cringed at how the Reds played the game.

(1) Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th, Nick Senzel walked to leadoff the inning. But Friedl popped up a bunt and didn't advance the runner. Then Senzel was thrown out stealing.

(2) Leading 3-2 in the 8th, Lucas Sims walked the leadoff batter and allowed a Jesse Winker single to put runners on corners. An Owen Miller sac flied to CF tied the game. But TJ Friedl, who had no shot at the runner at the plate, sailed the throw and allowed the go-ahead runner to advance to 2nd. Alexis Diaz came on with one out and allowed a line single to right field that scored that runner with the go-ahead run. Jake Fraley's throw to the plate was up the line and missed the cutoff man. Again, the runner advanced. The Brewers led 4-3.

(3) Nick Senzel botched a ball in LF in the 9th for a two base error.

Oh, no: Ben Lively pitched well, 4 IN, 3 H, 0 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K. But he left after four scoreless innings with an injury. This was his second start following his return from the IL with a pectoral strain. But he indicated after the game he wasn't feeling well.

Bazooka: Elly De La Cruz made a throw from 3rd to 1st at 97.9 mph......per MLB, the fasted recorded throw in the Statcast era (2015).

Snapped: Spencer Steer lined an infield single off 3B Andrew Monasterio to snap a career high 0 for 23 skid.

Thrice is nice: Matt McLain collected three hits

Deficit: The Reds 2 game deficit in the division is their largest since June 13 (2.5).

Bullpen:
Derek Law 0.1, R.....Ian Gibuat 1.2 IN, 0 R....Fernando Cruz 0.2 IN, 0 R....Lucas Sims 0.2 IN, 2 R...... Alexis Diaz 0.2, 0R....Buck Farmer 1.0, 0 R.

Give me a break: It's pretty clear. ML umpiring cannot keep up with the speed/movement of pitches today. You can’t be inconsistent and poor at the most fundamentally important aspect of the game. You just can’t. Umpiring was once again ridiculous. A seething David Bell was ejected and got his money's worth in the 2nd inning. Not sure how a sport expects to be taken seriously with the consistent Mickey Mouse umpiring being offered.

How the Reds scored
2nd: Votto RBI double scored India, 1-0 Reds
3rd: Fraley two-run HR, 3-1 Reds
