Marlins 3 Reds 1

The Marlins pushed across two tiebreaking runs in the 7th vs a bruised and weary Reds bullpen and made it stand up to beat the Reds 3-1 and fend off a series sweep Sunday afternoon in Miami. While the boxscore will show just one error, it was a brutal defensive afternoon for the Reds.

They dealt with rotation and bullpen injury chaos + short bench....I'll take 2 of 3 on road. Hell of a job by Bell piecing that series together. Now to Coors....heaven help the rotation/arms. Better be prepared to swing the lumber.

I'll add this: The radio call was refreshing today. Told the full story of the game.

Goodbye, Newman: Kevin Newman failed to convert three grounders into outs. Only one was scored an error. Newman also failed to tag at second and advance to third on a fly ball down the right field line. It prevented him from scoring on ground out.

Quotes of note:

"The Reds have to figure out someway to make their middle infield defense better"-The Cowboy

"Oh, boy," -The Cowboy after a ball Newman could turn into an out was scored a hit.

Who is this guy? Marlins SP Braxton Garrett entered having allowed 15 runs on 21 hits over his previous two starts and 9.2 IN. But the Reds managed just one run against him. He took a two-hit shutout into the 6th inning. He struck out three in the 1st and again in the 2nd. 5.0 IN, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K. 82 pitches/54 strikes.

Trading runs: Scoreless into the 6th, both teams finally pushed across a run. But Reds got just one run after loading the bases with no outs. India BB, Nick Senzel 1B, Spencer Steer BB and Tyler Stephenson RBI groundout. Henry Ramos rolled into a brutal inning ending DP.

Deserved better: Reds SP Luke Weaver was repeatedly sabotaged by his defense and ran out of gas because of extra pitches required. 5.1 IN, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 106 pitches/71 strikes. He's had back to back good outings.

Busy bullpen: Kevin Herget 1.0, 1 R......Alan Busenitz 0.2, 3 H, BB, R. He was pitching in MLB for the first time since 2018 (Japan)...Silvino Bracho 1.0, 0 R.

Shameful: If the Reds are not going to call-up Matt McLain, cool. Then put a cardboard cutout of Dave Concepcion out there and tape a fishing net to his arm. It would be better than status quo because they don't have a ML SS on the roster. I don't know how Nick Krall and David Bell keep hanging their pitchers out to dry with the defense and the extra pitches.

Epidemic: It's clear the credibility of official scoring isn't just a GABP thing. It's a joke around MLB. Why more is not being made of it is beyond me.
"That's a joke!" -The Cowboy on grounder booted by Newman being scored a hit.

Ouch: Tyler Stephenson struck out three times.
