How it ended: The A's put the first two batters of the 9th on vs Derek Law with a single and a fielding error of a sac bunt attempt by 1B Matt Reynolds. Alexis Diaz came on and promptly wild pitched the runners to 2nd and 3rd and then Esteury Ruiz lined a single to win it.
Reds take lead: Trailing 3-1 in the 6th, David Bell turned to pinch hitters TJ Friedl, who singled and Jake Fraley, who was intentionally walked in the go-ahead inning. Leadoff hitter Kevin Newman delivered the big blow with a two-out, two run single to give the Reds a 4-3 lead.
Brutal: The Reds put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs in the 9th with a Newman single and Spencer Steer double. But Jonathan India struck out, Tyler Stephenson struck out and Henry Ramos grounded out. 10 runners left on base, 2 for 14 w/RISP.
Who? Ken Waldichuk, who entered with a 7.82 ERA, had the Reds baffled into the 6th inning, leading 3-1: 5.2 IN, 3 R, 7 K.
Lodolo: 5+ IN, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 7 K, 2 HR, 70 pitches/49 strikes. He wobbled early, serving up a 1st inning, two-run 428 foot HR to Jesus Aguilar. He picked off Ruiz, the ML leader in steals with 11.
Bullpen: 4 IN, 2 R. Sims replaced Lodolo after a leadoff single in the 6th and loaded the bases, only to escape without damage, 1.0 IN, BB, HBP, 2 K, 0 R. Buck Farmer: 1.0 IN, 2 H, R. Derek Law 1.0, 1 R. Diaz H.
Nick by Day: Nick Senzel continues to swing a hot bat with a HR, 1B and nice sliding catch in CF. That's a five game hitting streak, with four multi-hit games. He's 10 for his last 18.
Timed out! Reynolds was called out on a 3rd strike pitch clock violation in his season debut.
He rested: Jonathan India was not in the starting lineup for the first time season. He did enter the game and singled in the 7th. Newman started at 2B and collected two hits from the leadoff spot.
Continuing to contribute: Ramos added two more hits to extend his hit streak to six straight games. He was right in the middle of the three run 6th inning uprising with a one out single to get things going.
Someday: Stephenson, 0 for 5 with 3 K, is still without a homer….28 games into the season. Hard to believe.
Stop it: Why have replay review if you are still going to blow the call? Seriously. How hard is it? They are getting a second chance to fix a mistake. And still didn't. India was called out at 3rd on an attempted double steal.
Next: They open a three game set in San Diego Monday night. Luke Weaver takes the ball.
Yikes…. Down on the Farm....the Louisville Bats lost 13-0 Sunday. Runs allowed since Thursday: 50. Game by game: 18-1-18-13.
