30th edition of My Random Thoughts: Sports, TV, music, food, life.......
Things that popped into my head this week..
I can't be the only one that finds paper plates grossly overpriced. What's up with that?
You can't complain the Reds don't spend money, are a farm system to the Yankees and will just trade away their good players......AND THEN....complain the Reds locked up Hunter Greene to a six-year extension.
I was looking for running shoes and texting photos to Kelly and Peyton as I tried them on, asking for their thoughts. Peyton's text: 'If you can picture a five year old wearing them, don't buy them.'
What a regular season for the Cyclones....103 points, division champs, nearly seven weeks without a loss in regulation. Playoffs should be fun.
It's going to be really interesting to see how FC Cincinnati navigates all this, busy schedule, Brenner transfer, international call-ups and injuries. Brandon Vazquez has gotta catch fire.
Have you ever just randomly pulled over while driving and taken in a few minutes of a youth baseball game? Do it.
Years from now, Connor Overton will be remembered during conversations about Jimmy Haynes, Tim Adleman, John Lamb, Brandon Finnegan, Keyvius Sampson and Tim Pugh.
It's easier to grab already developed/proven college basketball and football players in the portal than dealing with the growing pains/uncertainty of freshmen.
We are watching Rabbit Hole on Paramount. I love Kiefer Sutherland and would watch anything he's in. We are five episodes in and I really have idea what's happening. But I love it.
Pre-draft news conferences with NFL coaches and GM's are a complete and total waste of time.
It's stunning to watch how many outs the Reds simply don't convert on defense.
'The Beast', the 308 page NFL Draft Guide PDF featuring 401 scouting reports from Dane Brugler of The Athletic, makes the yearly subscription price of The Athletic well worth it. By itself.
MLB is about position versatility, using platoon advantages, keeping players fresh/healthy/productive and bullpens. You may not like it, but that's the way it is. It's 2023, not 1973.
We caught the band IMY2 at Hardrock Cincinnati last weekend. They are a trio from Nashville and they are really, really good. Covers with their own twist and original stuff. Blown away.
Matt McLain is going he's going to force the Reds to call him up. A scout told me "Kid's a ball player...baseball IQ off the charts....scrappy...might not get a hit one night, but always finds a way to contribute. He knows how to play the game and beat you."
Emmanuel Forbes, CB, Mississippi State, Calijah Kancey, DT, Pitt, Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame, Bryan Bresee, DT, Clemson, Julius Brents, CB, Kansas State. I have no idea at No. 28.
The Reds committed $53M to Hunter Greene and held a news conference. Hunter, Nick Krall and David Bell took questions. No sight of ownership. Interesting.
A starting pitcher can't control his team's bullpen, defense or offense. Can we please stop giving credence to a pitcher's W-L record? Same for a QB.
Always remember, the NFL draft is more than one round.
How about the continuing improvement and development of TJ Friedl?
Nothing sounds more small town than worrying about who likes our chili and who doesn't.
Mock drafts are dumb. But I can't stop using the Pro Football Focus Draft Simulator. I like seeing the players that consistently show up around the Bengals draft spot each round.
Did you know Sparky Anderson played 'The Great 8' in the same lineup just 87 times in 1975 and 1976 COMBINED? They went 69-18 (.793). But...but....but.....you need a set lineup, every day.
I can't stress this enough, especially for families: Get a soft-sided cooler and take food and drinks into GABP. And walk up to by tickets, don't pay on-line fees.
'Kiss a Girl' by Keith Urban ('09) is just a fantastic song.
New record set Thursday night: The Reds game lasted 2 hours and 9 minutes. My Extra Innings show lasted 2:33. Shout out to me for talking about a game longer than the game took to play.
Example No. 1 of why not to represent yourself in contract negotiations: Lamar Jackson.
There is no sport you will appreciate more in person than hockey.
The NFL draft process is apparently long enough to convince some teams that Anthony Richardson, a career 54.7 percent passer, is a 1st round pick.
What percentage of Reds fans want the players to win vs want the owners to lose?
I have no doubt we are eventually headed for a modern day version of the 1919 Black Sox scandal.
Favorite TV cop-detective-marshall last 25 years: Andy Sipowicz, Hank Voight, Vic Mackey, Raylan Givens, Danny Reagan, Harry Bosch.
Remember, a struggling ML player doesn't make your minor league prospect ready to be called up.
The NFL Draft makes me miss Jerry Jones. He created, 'The Drugstore List', one of the first NFL draft guides. He was a regular contributor to WLW from the days of Bob Trumpy all the way through my show, before he passed away several years ago. He was such a kind and knowledgeable man. His guide was simply and informative.
Obscure Reds All-Stars for $500, Alex: Alfredo Simon 2014, Felipe Lopez 2005. How?
You may want the Bengals to draft an OT in this draft. Good luck finding one.
Are you old enough to remember holding your cassette player against your radio to record a song and being upset when the DJ talked over the intro?
Given the choice between getting a celebrity autograph or shaking their hand, I'll take the handshake.
I keep bringing this up more out of curiosity than as a criticism. Tyler Stephenson has 0 home runs in 19 games this year and just 7 in his last 105 games/323 at-bats.
Don't worry about things you don't care about
