Phillies 4 Reds 0
Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola fired a complete-game shutout to beat the Reds 4-0 and complete a four game sweep at Citizens Bank Park.
The Reds fall to 48-75, a season low 27 games under .500 and season worst 23 games out of first place. Can they go 15-24 over the final 39 games to avoid 100 losses?
Filthy: Phillies starter Aaron Nola toyed with the Reds. 9 IN, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K. Donovan Solano singled in the 2nd inning and that was the Reds only hit until Aristides Aquino and Alejo Lopez singled to start the 8th. If was the first time the Reds put two runners on. But Nola responded with three consecutive strikeouts. The Reds took another shot at him in the 9th, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs but Aquino grounded out to seal the deal.
Dunn well: Justin Dunn made his best start with the Reds. 6 IN, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 92 pitches/58 strikes. He buckled down to get through the 6th inning, leaving a runner at 2nd with a strikeout of Nick Castellanos and fly out of Jean Segura. Last two starts: 11.0 IN, 7 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 9 K, 2.45 ERA.
Seriously? With Ross Detwiler on in the 7th, the Phillies scored two runs on a ground ball to TJ Friedl in left-center field with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out. There was confusion/lack of communication on the relay throw that went into 2B and Alejo Lopez had no idea the runner from 1st base never stopped.
Middletown guy: Kyle Schwarber broke up a scoreless game with a 451 foot solo blast (No. 35) off Dunn in the 3rd inning.
Beat goes on: Jose Barrero struck out twice......extending his strikeout streak to consecutive game.....that's 34 in 70 ABs.
Got him! Austin Romine cut down Segura attempting to steal 2nd base.
Hot corner: Nick Senzel made his 3rd career start at third base.
Who's on 1st, again? Solano make it back-to-back nights at 1B.
Daily transaction: The Reds recalled from Triple-A Louisville RHP Dauri Moreta and placed on the 15-day injured list RHP T.J. Zeuch (back soreness).
Who gets the call? The Reds will need a SP on Monday. I wonder if they do in fact call-up 24-year LH Brandon Williamson from Louisville to make his ML debut? He was acquired in the Jesse Winker/Eugenio Suarez deal with the Mariners. He's been decent at Triple-A with a 3.77 ERA...but he's pitched just 43 innings over the 9 starts, with 26 walks in 43 innings and a WHIP of 1.56.
