July 1,1973: Hal King's 9th inning homer turns season for Reds

OTD: July 1, 1973

The Reds were down to their last strike and on the verge of falling 12 games back of the first place Dodgers.

But third string catcher Hal King hit a three-run home run off Don Sutton to stun the Dodgers and turn the season.

The Reds would win the nightcap and go 60-26 the rest of the way, winning the NL West with a record of 99-63.

The Reds would eventually lose to the Mets in five games in the NLCS.

Al Michaels and Joe Nuxhall have the call.

King hit .183 in 60 at-bats for the Reds over the 1973 and 1974 seasons.
