On this date in 2001
I was in New York City for the premiere of the film 61*.
61* was a film written directed by Billy Crystal. It starred Barry Pepper and Thomas Jane as Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle.
The movie details their quest to break Babe Ruth's (1927) single-season home record of 60 during the 1961 seasons.
The film first aired on HBO on April 28, 2001.
I was working for 1360 Homer The Sports Animal, hosting the afternoon show from 3-6pm.
I was part of group of several sports talk radio hosts that were invited from around the country by HBO.
HBO flew me out for the premiere and a Yankees game, all expenses paid.
I believe we watched the premier at Chelsea West Theatre in New York City.
Billy Crystal came out on the stage, welcomed us and set up the showing of 61*.
I got to meet Crystal afterwards. I can remember saying, "Billy, I'm Lance McAlister from Cincinnati." He shook my hand and said, "Well hello Lance McAlister from Cincinnati."
If you have never seen the movie, check it out. Well done.
