2024 Cincinnati Open Semifinals: Pegula vs Badosa

WTA semifinal action wrapped up at the 2024 Cincinnati Open on Sunday. The 6 seed Jessica Pegula looked to make it 2 finals in 2 weeks with a chance to do something no woman has done since 1973; Win Canada and Cincinnati back-to-back. In her way was the last unseeded player remaining in Spain's Paula Badosa.

Early on it looked like Pegula was going to cruise to a quick victory with early breaks of Badosa taking the 1stset. However, the second set would see a series of rain delays that would slow down the University of Pittsburgh alum, and she would find herself losing the 2nd set to Badosa. Then came the pivotal 3rd set. Playing her 4th match in 3 days, many questioned if Pegula would have the stamina for a 3rd set seeing how she went 3 sets last night with Leylah Fernandez. This time Pegula would not need a tiebreaker to finish her opponent cruising to victory and moving on to the final.

Jessica Pegula defeats Paula Badosa 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Pegula now looks to become the first woman to win the titles in Cincinnati and Canada in back-to-back weeks since Evonne Goolagong did it in 1973.

Pegula will face Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka Monday afternoon for the Rookwood Trophy.
