The world's largest airline pilot union has recommended that pilots discontinue the use of terms considered offensive to women and LGBTQ individuals, highlighting "cockpit" as an example of non-inclusive language.
The Air Line Pilots Association, International, representing more than 70,000 pilots globally, has stated its collaboration with a United Nations agency on policy matters. The ALPA's diversity, equity, and inclusion language guide, published in 2021, identifies several terms and phrases to be avoided, particularly "masculine generalizations," which are seen as non-inclusive.
