US athlete Ilona Maher, a native of Burlington, Vermont, is making waves in the world of rugby. The 27-year-old, who stands at 5'10", transitioned to rugby during her time at Quinnipiac University. There, she not only earned All-American Honors but also led her team to three National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) titles. In 2017, Maher was honored with the MA Sorenson Award, given to the best women's rugby player in college athletics.

Maher made her international debut at the 2018 Paris Sevens tournament after a standout performance with the Scion Rugby Academy at the 2018 Las Vegas Invitational's Elite title. She then competed at the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 in San Francisco and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics held in 2021. Her combination of speed and power earned her an invite to the Women's Eagles fifteens camp in 2021, where she made her official debut against Canada during the Pacific Four Series in Glendale, Colorado.

Maher is now set to compete in her second consecutive Summer Games for rugby sevens at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The US women’s rugby sevens squad, which finished fifth in Rio 2016 and sixth in Tokyo 2020, is aiming for a medal this summer. Maher, a member of the national team since 2018, is one of seven players on the roster making at least their second appearance at the Olympics.
