Escaped Inmate Dead following SWAT Standoff

( Mason ) - An escaped prisoner is dead, apparently shot by police early Tuesday morning.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation confirms it is investigating an officer-involved shooting at the Baymont by Wyndham hotel near I-71 and Kings Mills Rd. That's where 27-year-old Thomas Cromwell (pictured above) was holed up. Police and SWAT were called to the hotel Monday evening, and that led to an hours-long standoff.

After some kind of loud noise around 3am, the Warren County Coroner confirms Cromwell was found dead. A woman was also taken from the scene, though her involvement is unclear.

Cromwell and 29-year-old Shawn Black (pictured below) escaped River City Correctional late Saturday night.

Black remains at large.

Despite a series of inmate escapes from facilities run by Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey, the sheriff points out that River City Correctional is not under the purview of her office.

We're waiting on more from investigators.
