The Indiana woman accused of abandoning her child in Colerain Township is behind bars in Georgetown, Kentucky. Heather Nicole Adkins, 32, of Shelbyville, Indiana was arrested Saturday evening at a gas station where police say the business called police about an unwanted person on their property.
Police discovered Adkins had a warrant for her arrest over an unpaid ticket in 2011 and took her into custody. However, they didn't know she was wanted in Hamilton County for child endangering, until the officials began getting calls from individuals and the media.
Adkins confessed to abandoning her son to a Lexington TV station reporter after telling police several stories about relatives she had in the area. When asked about telling conflicting stories about leaving him with someone, she said, "I didn't leave him with anyone."
Adkins was also confronted by WKYT'S Jeremy Tombs about why she left the boy 75 miles from their home at the end of a dark dead end street before driving off. Adkins replied, "To save him from me."
Scott County Court records indicate she'll be in court there on March 21, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. Prosecutors in Hamilton County will need to extradite her to face a charge of child endangering.
