(Powell County, KY) - A 24-year-old Alexandria woman is dead after an apparent accident in Red River Gorge.
WKYT reports that the body of Gabriella Smith has been found at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff.
The station reports that Smith, who was a medical student at the University of Kentucky, had been hiking the Auxier Ridge area this past Monday. Searchers were called out after Smith had not returned home.
The director of Powell County Emergency Management Kevin Babcock tells Newsradio 700 WLW that they were called out for a search and rescue operation on Tuesday morning. "Later that day we turned into a recovery mission", said Babcock.
"It's a sad day for everybody."
