( Covington, Kentucky ) - It'll be a little bit longer before the Roebling Suspension Bridge is open to vehicle traffic.
A statement from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet on Monday says "unique challenges" are delaying the reopening. The bridge was shut down all vehicle traffic and the east side pedestrian walkway in April ever since sandstone fell onto the bridge from the north tower. Since then, crews have been working on a temporary solution: installing safety netting to catch any more sandstone that could fall. Those "unique challenges" refer to securing that netting on the 152-year-old historic bridge.
The bridge is now slated to open August 9.
State transportation leaders are also working on permanent repairs to the sandstone towers as part of routine maintenance slated to start in the spring of 2020.
