Food Assistance Available Early Due To Shutdown

(Hamilton County) - Anyone who gets food assistance will notice their cards are loaded with February's benefits early.

Hamilton County Job and Family Services says the benefits will be loaded on January 16 and have to last until the normal March load date, because of the government shutdown. For some people, that could be as much as two-and-a-half months.

Director of Hamilton County Job and Family Services Moira Weir says she will talk to county commissioners tomorrow about releasing the benefits early.

More than 100,000 people in the county use benefits. Anyone who is re-applying for SNAP needs to do so by January 30 to receive the assistance.

Weir said the agency hasn't been told that Temporary Assistance For Needy Families, Medicaid or Child Care funding will be affected by the shutdown.
