( South Fairmont ) - Police on Monday morning were called to the 2100 block of Harrison Ave for a child struck by at least one vehicle.
Investigators say the teen girl was trying to catch a Metro bus when she was struck by a passing car near Sarvis Ct. The girl was clipped by one vehicle, knocked down, and then struck by another car. Police say the first vehicle involved stayed on the scene. The second car kept going. The girl was taken to UC Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
The girl has been identified as 15-year-old Gabriella Rodriguez, a ninth grader at Western Hills High School.
"We're taking it pretty hard," said Principal Dr Carlos Blair in a public statement from outside the school. "We're all trying to just come together and support each other during this time," Blair said. He says grief counselors are available for students.
Police say the primary striking vehicle is a white Toyota Corolla with an Ohio license plate, possibly driven by an Hispanic woman. The car was last seen headed southbound/inbound on Harrison.
