Multiple Fatalities Reported Following Shooting At Maryland Newspaper

Police said that they have one person in custody after he allegedly started shooting outside of the newsroom of the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. Authorities confirmed that five people have died and that there are multiple injuries. They added that everybody who was wounded has been transported to local hospitals. 

Police said the suspect surrendered to first responders and was taken into custody without incident. He is being interrogated by detectives. According to CBS News, he is not cooperating and refuses to identify himself and was not carrying identification. The suspect was identified as a white male in his 20's and he used a "long gun" to carry out the attack. 

There are multiple local, state, and federal agencies investigating the scene. Authorities said that the building is "tactically clear" but will remain closed as police comb it for clues. Police said they found what they believed to be an "explosive device" at the scene that was "taken care of."

Phil Davis, who is a reporter for the newspaper tweeted about the horrific events as they unfolded. He said that the "gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees."

A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead.

Joshua McKerrow, who works as a photojournalist for the paper, shared photos of the massive police presence outside of the office. 

President Donald Trump said that he has been briefed on the situation and offered his "thoughts and prayers" to the victims.
