 Derek Cope

(Hamilton)  -  An inmate is back in custody after he escaped during court transport and jumped into a river.

At around 11:30 a.m. today 32-year-old Derek Cope escaped an inmate transport vehicle and jumped into a river in Hamilton.  He was apprehended by police shortly after.

“Jumping in the river is never a good idea and I think he got lucky,” Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones said in a release.  “Maybe he was trying to cool off from this heat but he’s back in custody where he belongs.”

Cope is being held on charges of burglary and theft. He could receive more charges after today’s escape.
