FOP President Wants New County Jail

(Cincinnati, OH) - Cincinnati FOP President Dan Hils said Tuesday that  lawmakers keep passing mandatory minimums that require longer jail time for criminals. He said this along with the opioid epidemic is causing overcrowding and unsafe conditions at the Hamilton County jail.

"I took a tour there a few months back and I can tell you from a guy that's a street hardened cop, I looked at that and went 'I don't know how these guys are doing this here'. Their elevators don't work half the time when a corrections officer needs help on one floor or the other."

When asked about the issue, Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley said he agrees with Hils, but said county leaders are the ones in charge of finding the funding for such a project.

"Ten years ago I was in favor of a new jail, and I at least made the case as well as commissioners (David) Pepper, Portune, and others, but we (leaders in the city) don't run or operate the jail it's a county budget decision not ours."
