Child Free After Hostage Situation, Suspect Now in Custody

(Cincinnati, Oh.)--It dragged on over 24 hours but now the man holding the 10 year-old boy hostage at an apartment in Butler County has surrendered.

It took 30 hours of negotiation between Police and the suspect, identified as Donald Tobias Gazaway, 31, to convince him to let the child go and turn himself in.

The situation started Saturday night just after midnight when an altercation broke out between Gazawasy and two people inside an apartment at 7100 Liberty West Dr. Two people including the little boys mother were able to flee but the child was not.

Police say Gazaway, reportedly fired over 20 rounds at the officers while he held the child inside. Neighbors at the Springs at Liberty Township Apartments were evacuated. No one was hurt.

The Butler County Sheriff's office says Gazaway, came outside, just after 6 o-clock Sunday morning using the boy as a human shield, they were then able to take him into custody.

He was booked on charges of kidnapping, felonious assault and inducing panic.

The boy was unharmed but was taken to a local hospital with his mother to be checked out.
