Kentucky Man Seriously Injures Covington Police Officer

( Covington, Ky ) - A Covington Police Officer will be recovering in the hospital this Christmas, after he was assaulted early Sunday morning. 

Officers were attempting to arrest Antonio Ford, 33, just before 1:30am in the 900 block of Madison Avenue. Ford was wanted on a 4th degree assault charge.

Police say Ford attempted to flee the scene and assaulted an officer during the process. That officer suffered serious injuries but he is in stable condition and is expected to fully recover.

The injured officer will not be identified at this time.

Ford was eventually taken into custody. In addition to his prior charges, he is now facing a 3rd Degree felony charge of assaulting of a police officer, a felony fleeing and resisting arrest. He's currently in the Kenton County Detention Center.

In a statement, Covington Police say, "We thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers for our officers and a special thank you to a good Samaritan who rendered first aid and assistance to our officer prior to the response of the Covington Fire Department."
