(Cincinnati) He arrived in Cincinnati in November of 1996 when he was just nine months told. Now at the age of 21, one of the zoo's rare white tigers has died.
Akere was recently diagnosed with a non-treatable oral cancer. He was in renal failure and had severe arthritis in his hips. Zoo staff members had been providing him with medication to ease his pain, but say it was clear the quality of his life was not going to improve.
At almost 22, Akere was the oldest of his kind at any accredited zoo in North America.
