Tips For Sending Gifts During The Holiday Season

If you're planning on sending gifts through the mail this holiday season, David Van Allen with the United States Postal Service has some tips for you.

  • Mail early if you want your packages sent in time for Christmas. Dec. 14th is the last day to send for retail ground service, Dec. 19th for first class mail service, Dec. 20th for Priority Mail service, and Dec. 22nd for Priority Mail Express
  • Include a packing list with the delivery address inside the package in case the address on outside becomes unreadable
  • Perishable items, liquids , or hazardous materials may be prohibited. Ask your local clerk on what may be sent.
  • Pack items tightly with packing peanuts or bubble wrap in an undamaged and sturdy box.
  • Packages can be delivered to work or another safe location if the receiver will not be at home when the package arrives.

Van Allen said that postal customers should expect delays in delivery during the holiday season.

"Package volume is up another double digit this year it's been going up by double digits for the past several years so there's alot of people shipping these days shopping on line and doing all that," said Van Allen. "So don't be surprised if your carrier is a little later than usual during this time."
