Mount Airy Fire Caused By Bed Bugs In Childs Room

(700 WLW)- The Cincinnati Emergency Communications Center received a call late Tuesday night, of a bedroom on fire in the 4000 block of Hawaiian Terrace in Mount Airy. First arriving fire companies encountered heavy fire from a second floor window extending into the common attic space in the middle of a 10 unit, multi-family building. A second alarm was immediately transmitted, and companies initiated aggressive, offensive firefighting operations. All occupants safely evacuated prior to the arrival of the fire department and all searches were negative. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin and the fire in the attic space was confined to adjacent units on either side of the original fire apartment. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. After investigation, the fire started when a juvenile occupant attempted to kill bed bugs in his bedroom and the cause is accidental. It is unknown exactly how many people/families will be displaced but preliminary the Red Cross is assisting 3 adults and 5 children. Smoke alarms were present and sounding in the building. Damage is estimated at $300,000.
