Local Leaders Speak Out After DACA Ended

(Washington D.C.)--U.S. Senator Rob Portman release a statement Tuesday, after the repeal of the (DACA) Program. 

The Trump administration announced Today that The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals-program or (DACA) will end. The policy was an executive action from the Obama administration in June 2012. It protects hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought into the U.S. as children.

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) released the following statement “Those in the DACA program are here through no fault of their own, and for many this is the only country they know." He adds that "I support bipartisan efforts to find a permanent solution that will allow those in the DACA program to stay here and continue to contribute to our society. I believe we can and should respect the rule of law while also dealing with this issue in a humane and compassionate way, and that's the approach I believe the administration and members of both parties in Congress should take as we look at legislative solutions on this issue.”

Locally Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld posted on his Facebook page today, "We cannot turn our back on 800,000 children - that might be who our President is, but that's not who we are."

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions made the announcement today that there will be a six-month grace period in which Congress will have a window to come up with a legislative solution. Essentially forcing the hand of Congress to come up with a bi-partisan solution to fix (DACA).
