(Cincinnati, Oh.)--Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis will be away from the team to deal with an unspecified "minor health issue," the team announced Tuesday.
The team said in a statement that Lewis' absence is expected to be brief, with a possible return on Tuesday or later in the week. The 58-year-old Lewis is in his 15th season as coach of the Bengals, guiding the club to a 118-103-3 record. Cincinnati has reached the playoffs seven times under Lewis and had a streak of five consecutive postseason appearances snapped in 2016, when the Bengals finished 6-9-1.
"Coach Marvin Lewis will be taking time away from the team to focus on a minor health issue," the statement read. "He will be back as soon as possible, which could be today or later this week. Special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons will lead the team during Coach Lewis' absence."
Simmons also is in his 15th season with the Bengals. He has served as the special teams coordinator for the past five seasons.
This news comes one day after Bengals tight end C.J. Uzomah had to be carted off the field Monday with an apparent lower leg injury. The 24-year-old had 25 catches for 234 yards and a touchdown last season.
The Bengals open preseason play against the Buccaneers on Friday. The regular season opens on September 10th at home versus the Ravens.
