Cincinnati Hosting Veterans Wheelchair Games

(Cincinnati)  They come from across the United States, Puerto Rico and Great Britain to compete against each other and display how they have been able to overcome their disabilities. The largest annual wheelchair sporting event is being held July 17-22 at locations all across the Tristate. The disabled athletes will compete in 18 different events aided by more than 3000 local volunteers.

The National Veterans Wheelchair Games are sponsored by the Veterans Administration and Paralyzed Veterans of America. The competitors include veterans having spinal cord injuries, amputations, multiple sclerosis or other neurological conditions who require a wheelchair for athletic competition, and who are eligible to receive care at a VA medical facility. The organizations website says "the Games serve to encourage veterans to become aware of their abilities and potential while promoting a spirit of healthy activity and camaraderie."

The head of the Cincinnati USA Convention and Visitors Bureau says he is proud of how the community has come together for the Games. The national president of the Paralyzed Veterans of America says "Between the inspiring athletes, the incredible support from the local community and the extraordinary sporting events that will take place, this week is sure to be unforgettable for both the athletes and for Cincinnati."
