Hundreds Compete In The Madeira Criterium & 5K Run

Thousands of families and spectators lined the streets of downtown Madeira for the 8th annual Madeira Criterium & 5K Run today. More than 200 runners laced up for the 5K which kicked off the day’s activities, then enjoyed a pancake breakfast afterwards. Amateur cyclists then raced through the streets of Madeira throughout the morning, before a kids’ ride in the afternoon. Fierce competition among elite and pro cyclists concluded the day’s festivities, as they zipped through the winding 1-mile course at speeds up to 30 MPH. The cyclists competed for $7000 in prizes.

Volunteers with Outdoors Madeira, Inc. organized the event, which raised more than $3000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the Madeira Schools Foundation. More than 120 volunteers from the Madeira Chamber of Commerce, Republic Services, and several other local businesses donated their time and services.

Michael Christman of Cincinnati came in first place in the 5K, finishing the race in 17 minutes and 45 seconds. Hope Erbach was the first female to finish, with a race time of 20 minutes and 40 seconds.  

Winners of the professional cycling races are as follows: Pro Women – Rachel Metherd of Bloomington, IndianaPro Men – Jack McCann of Hyde Park,
