(Hamilton, OH)--Scammers are at it again in Butler County, and now they are using actual names of deputies, according to Sheriff Richard K. Jones.
Jones said that a victim came into the sheriff's department asking for "Sgt. Owens." The victim said he received a phone call from the "sergeant" stating that he failed to appear for jury duty and now owes a surety bond. The bond amount was about $1300.
The victim asked if the department has a "Sgt. Owens." He was advised that a Sgt. Owens is employed there.
The victim was asked to put a large sum of money on a green dot card from CVS Pharmacy , and then read the numbers on the back of the card so the suspect could intercept the money.
Jones said the sheriff's department never asks people for money by phone for any reason. If you receive such a call, hang up and notify the sheriff's department that you received the call.
