Hamilton Officer Not Charged in Shooting

( HAMILTON, OH ) -- On Saturday, April 22nd, around 3 PM, 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call about a black male who had reportedly shot another subject outside of an apartment building on Forest Park Drive in Hamilton.

The man who had called 9-1-1 gave a fake name to the dispatcher. It was later discovered that the man was Michael Wilson-Salzl, 24. Salzl gave a fake name to dispatchers because he had done a similar incident in March 2016 and had a history of mental illness and suicidal thoughts.

In the 2016 incident, Salzl made the same type of call to 9-1-1, and when officers arrived on the scene, he was holding a wooden object wrapped in black tape. When officers arrested Salzl, he said that he wanted to commit suicide.

In this incident, when the officer arrived on the scene, he was not able to make it out of his cruiser before he saw Salzl reportedly closing in on him with a butcher knife raised above his shoulder in a threatening manner [Hamilton Police Chief Craig Buchiet demonstrates below].

The officer gave Salzl repeated commands to stop, but when Salzl got within 12 feet of the officer, he opened fire and shot Salzl 3 times in the chest, killing him.

On Monday, May 1, a grand jury decided not to charge the officer in the shooting.
