Stick with the Plan, Stick with Arroyo...For Now

The plan for Bronson Arroyo was NEVER for him to be a 15 game winner.  It was NEVER even for him to make a case that he was a part of the future of this ballclub.

The plan was for him to eat up some innings early in this season until (God-willing) somebody...namely Cody Reed, Michael Lorenzen, Robert Stevenson, or Sal Ramano...was ready to become that dependable 5th starter for the future of this team.  Nothing more than that.  It was a mutually beneficial relationship: Arroyo got a chance to finish out his career having beaten to odds and proven at age 40 and coming off missing the last two seasons that he still had a bit left in the tank.  The Reds in turn got a guy they knew was reliable and yes was a bit of a feel good story AND MOSTLY was someone that could bide them some time until the next young up-and-comer was revealed.  This was the plan 3 months ago.  The Reds knew it.  Bronson knew it, You and I knew it.

So even with Arroyo struggling (10 innings, 9 earned runs, 4 HR) what has changed?  The only thing that has changed is the Reds are overachieving at the moment and us fans are a bit greedy.  We see Arroyo as the only weak link on an otherwise very good team.

But things will settle down and some reality will eventually come back.  So there is not reason to abandon the plan and never let Arroyo throw another inning.

It's easy to get rid of someone but often much harder to replace him with someone who is better.  Right now the Reds don't have a starter who is ready to be better than Arroyo.  Stephenson and Reed struggled mightily last year but are now slowly getting into form working in the bullpen.  Lorenzen may...or may not...be best suited for the bullpen, it's where the most of his success the last calendar year has come.  Sal Romano is 23 and has thrown a whopping 13 innings of AAA baseball in his entire life.  There IS NO CLEAR OPTION...YET.  The organization is hoping that option becomes more clear in the next month.  Until then, they are happy...and we should at least be understanding...to let Arroyo serve the role he was brought here to do.

If it gets into July and we are still seeing the same from Arroyo then yes it's time to get upset.  But right now the plan is working so stick with it.
