A Temporary Reprieve for Mother Facing Deportation

A Fairfield mother who was going to be deported from the United States today will not be sent back to Mexico immediately. Maribel Trujillo will remain in the country until the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals rules on a request to block her deportation. Supporters of Trujillo held a prayer vigil all night outside the jail where she is being held.

Trujillo has been in the country for 15 years after fleeing Mexico to get away from the drug cartel which was harassing her family. She has four children who are American citizens and her supporters say it would be wrong to tear her family apart. Ten years ago, Trujillo was discovered during a raid on Koch foods and her case for being deported has been pending ever since. She has filed a motion for asylum in the United States saying she cannot return to Mexico because of the drug lords who kidnapped her father.

There is no word on when the Sixth Circuit Court might rule on her emergency stay to block deportation. The supporters of Trujillo have also asked Ohio Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown to intervene with the Immigration Department on her behalf.
