Phishing Scam Lures Mt. Healthy Schools Employee Into Giving Out Tax Info

A phishing scam is causing a crisis in the Mt. Healthy School District. Last week an employee sent W-2 information to a person she thought was her boss after she received an email requesting the information on February 15th. Later it became apparent, her boss didn't send the email, but it came from a phishing scammer instead.

The employee sent tax information to the scammer about 600 current and former employees who had received a W-2 for tax year 2016.

Mount Healthy School District Superintendent Dr. Mary Cosby told 700WLW that they have contacted the Mt. Healthy Police about the matter and said anyone who is impacted should call police to report their involvement in the incident. She said those affected can call her office and give the school district their contact information for updates on the situation.

"As soon I found out that evening I contacted the staff members that I had e-mails for," said Cosby, " and we did try to make arrangements to let other people know what's going on."

Dr. Cosby said the district is sending out an official letter to all parties affected about the incident and about what the district plans on doing to protect employees from further scams. Dr. Cosby said the school board is holding an executive session meeting Thursday evening to discuss the matter.
