( CINCINNATI, OH ) -- The new home of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will be the Otto M. Budig Theater at 1195 Elm Street in Over-the-Rhine. They first broke ground in the summer of 2016 and construction has been reportedly moving on time and within budget, so doors are expected to open in June.
The buyout is completed, all of the subcontractors have been contracted, and the fundraising is still progressing. CSC is $1-million away from their goal, which puts them at $16-million raised so far.
The new stage will be what is called a "thrust stage" that will go out into the audience. This makes the crowd in any seat in the theater only 20 feet away from the play taking place. Because of this, the price for tickets, no matter what seat you choose, will be the same.
In the first year at the Otto M. Budig Theater, there will be 285 performances in total and there is a projected growth in student participation of 65%.
Before the new theater opens, Shakespeare in the Park starts in Washington Park on Sunday, August 13. Then, throughout the rest of the month, they will be in parks all around Cincinnati. Also in August, there will be an open-house planned inside the new theater.
The season gets kicked off on September 8 with William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Pre-sale tickets for the 2017-2018 season have been on sale for only 1 month and they have sold more than they did in the 2016-2017 season.
