Zoo Names Baby Hippo

(Cincinnati,Oh.)--The Cincinnati Zoo's Baby Hippo has a name.

The staff at the Zoo have been giving little Fiona round the clock care sense she was born earlier this month.

Michelle Curley with the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden says the Hippo was born six weeks early and was severely underweight  at only 29LB. Curly says "she had been gaining weight steadily sense she was born last week but dipped down a little bit yesterday, and seams to be about the same today."

Fiona's glucose levels dipped over the last two days and her Ph levels were off track, said Zoo Veterinarians. An IV was brought in to give her fluids and supplements to get her numbers up.

The Baby Nile Hippo has been bottle feed sense birth and is getting a mix of her mothers milk and formula with added supplements to help her with digestion.

Curley said, the team providing Fiona with round the clock care wanted to give the baby a name. "The keepers had been kicking around names and they thought that Fiona means fair, and they spend a lot of time with her and think that name suits her personality."
