Deters Steps Off Tensing Retrial

( Hamilton County ) - Ray Tensing will not be face-to-face with Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters at his retrial later this year.

A statement from Deters' office late Friday morning says that he's planning on focusing all his efforts on the resentencing hearing of Anthony Kirkland. "Even though one of both of these cases may be reset, it is important that both of these serious cases have prosecution teams who can devote the time needed to prepare for these retrials.

Tensing is a former University of Cincinnati police officer who's charged with murder in the shooting death of Sam Dubose during a traffic stop in 2015. A jury could not come to a unanimous verdict and a mistrial was declared in the case in November. The retrial is scheduled for May. Deters says Seth Tieger and Stacey DeGraffenreid will prosecute that case.

Kirkland was sentenced to death in 2010 for the murders of three teen girls and an adult woman between 2006 and 2009. The Ohio Supreme Court granted Kirkland a stay of execution in 2014. His resentencing is also set for May. Deters say he'll handle that alongside Mark Piepmeier and Rick Gibson.
