Cubs 13 Reds 4
Well, so much for that sweep.
The Reds looked like a team clearly inspired by the trade deadline help yesterday and front office promotions announced today.
The Cubs blitzed Nick Lodolo for a career high tying 8 runs, including 6 in the first three innings. It was 6-0 before the Reds had a hit.
The Cubs had 17 hits, including eight doubles. The Reds had six hits. The 13 runs is a season high allowed. That +44 run differential certainly took a hit.
Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks (5 IN, 3 R) entered with a 6.95 ERA, and a fastball averaging 87.9 mph. The Reds didn’t record a hit until one out in the 4th.
Lodolo: 5.2 IN, 11 H, 8 R, 0 BB, 6 K. Career high tying runs. Struggled to land breaking pitches. 11 pitch 1st. 2 run 2nd. 4 run 3rd. 15th HBP. With a bullpen game Tuesday, he was going to be out there for a while. After the Reds cut it to 6-3 in the 5th, he allowed a 2-run HR to Ian Happ to end his night.
Down 6-0, Elly doubled, but was thrown out stealing 3rd on a walk by Friedl to end the 4th inning. Somewhere, Tom Emanski had to weep.
Jake Fraley: 3-R HR. 2 of his 3 HR over the last week.
Santiago Espinal: 2 H, 2B, 11 game hit streak
Jeimer Candelario: 1 for 4, 3 K. Now 5 for last 47 and 17 for 106.
Jakob Junis: 1.1, 4 H, 3 R, BB, 2 K. Yozver Zulueta: 2.0, 2 R.
After Lodolo labored through a four run 3rd, Fraley led off the inning by swinging/grounding out on the first pitch. That’s a lack of awareness.
Happ: 31 career HR in 112 games vs Reds, 18 HR in 56 games at GABP.
Hunter Greene (16), Lodolo (15) are No. 1-2 in MLB in HBP. Reds are No. 4 at 63.
The start of the game was delayed 12 minutes by rain.
1B Ty France entered in the 8th inning. Popped up.
C Eric Yang made his MLB debut, K as pinch hitting in the 9th.
How they scored:
5th Fraley 3-R HR, 6-3 Cubs
8th Benson RBI 2B, 13-4 Cubs
