Yankees 7 Reds 6 (10 innings)

Alex Diaz threw back-to-back wild pitches in the bottom of the 10th to bring home the winning run and the Yankees beat the Reds 7-6 in 10 innings to snap the Reds five game winning streak.

The Reds led 4-0 after two innings, trailed 5-4 after three innings, took a 6-5 lead in the 5th inning and held it until the Yankees tied it up for the first time in the 8th inning.

Tied 6-6 in the 9th inning, Aaron Boone once again turned to Clay Holmes. He walked the leadoff batter Stuart Fairchild and Brandon Drury reached on a one out infield single. But Tommy Pham flew out and Joe Votto grounded out.

The Reds threatened again the 10th when Tyler Stephenson's single sent ghost runner Joey Votto to 3rd base with no outs. But Matt Reynolds struck out and Kyle Farmer bounced into a double play.

Quick start: The Reds reached Luis Severino for a 1st inning run on a Votto RBI groundout. Severino walked two and threw 25 pitches.
The Reds had not scored in the first inning since June 21 (20 games) when India led off with a homer vs Tony Gonsolin of LA.

Homer Happy: Leading 1-0, the Reds hit back-to-back-to-back jacks off Luis Severino in the 2nd inning....Farmer's first since June 2, career No. 201 for Mike Moustakas and career No. 1 for Fairchild. The Reds’ first set of back-to-back-to-back HR since Eugenio Suárez, Jesse Winker & Derek Dietrich, May 5, 2019 vs SF.

Injury exit: Severino walked off the mound after a couple of warm-up pitches (shoulder) before the 3rd inning and was done: 2 IN, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, K, 3 HR.
Wonder what the injury does to the Yankees interest in Luis Castillo?

Escalation: Leading 4-0 into the 3rd inning, things unraveled on Mike Minor and the Reds when a booted DP ball by India and later a botched rundown opened the gates to a five run inning that gave the Yankees a 5-4 lead. Only one run was charged to Minor and he was at 70 pitches. India missed 48 games with the hamstring but has still already has committed 6 errors......in only 109 chances to being the night.

Go-ahead 5th: Votto's tied the game with a double and Stephenson's sacrifice fly gave them a 6-5 lead.

Short work: Minor lasted just 4 IN, allowing 5 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K.....91 pitches/56 strikes.

Bullpen: Buck Farmer 2.0 IN, 0 R, 4 K, Joel Kuhnel 1.0 IN, 0 R, Ian Gibaut served up the game-tying homer to Giancarlo Stanton in the 8th.
Hunter Strickland 1.0, 0 R. Diaz 0.1, 0 ER, loss.

Doubling up: Votto drove in two runs...one coming on a ground rule double in the 5th inning. His first multi-RBI game since June 9 (22 games).
That's 810 career extra-base hits, 2nd in Reds history (Rose 868) and 111th in MLB (110. Morgan/813).

No-go/then a go: Nick Senzel was scratched with mid-back stiffness. Fairchild got the start in CF. Senzel did pinch-run in the 8th and was promptly picked off by Aroldis Chapman. Senzel has been caught stealing twice, picked off three times and made baserunning outs four other times. That's hard to do.

The journey: Fairchild had a two hit night. He was drafted by the Reds in Round 2 of the 2017 draft. He was traded to Arizona for Archie Bradley in 2020.
The Reds claimed him on waivers from the Giants last month. This is the 3rd ML team he's played for this season. Fairchild is the first player to homer in his first plate appearance as a Red since Tyler Stephenson, July 27,2020 vs Cubs.
