Reds done in by 8 run inning by Padres in 9-6 loss

Padres 9 Reds 6

Good news: The Reds scored the first run of the game and the final five runs of the game.

Bad news: The Padres scored 9 runs in between, including 8 runs in the 4th inning and made it stand up.

Attendance: 10,056.

Escalation: It was 1-1 to the 4th inning when the first 8 Padres reached/scored vs Reiver Sanmartin. Eric Hosmer hit a 3-run shot into the Bowtie Bar.
Sanmartin was done after walking in a run to make it 6-1 with no outs. Jeff Hoffman relieved and served up a bases loaded clearing triple to Manny Machado to make it 9-1. Sanmartin: 3 IN, 8 H, 9 R, 2 HR. ERA now 10.91.

Gone: The GABP streak of three consecutive games without either team hitting a HR ended in the 3rd inning when Ha-Seong Kim homered to make it 1-1. Tonight was game 1,491 at GABP. There has never been a four game homerless streak.

Nick At Night: Nick Senzel collected two hits, including a homer and scored twice. He equaled his HR total of a year ago (124 plate appearances)

Cleaning up...what? For the 9th time in 17 games, cleanup hitter Joey Votto did not get a plate appearance in the 1st inning. Votto led off the 2nd and 4th innings. He entered the game without a run scored in his last 12 games and without an RBI in his last 13 games. He scored a run and drove in a run.

He's baaaaack: Jonathan India returned from the IL after missing nine games. He doubled in the 5th inning. He has one walk and has not been hit by a pitch in 35 plate appearances this season.

Offense: The Reds got on the board first in the 2nd inning. Nick Senzel singled and went to second when catcher Austin Nola's throw back to pitcher Joe Musgrove hit the bat of Colin Moran. Moran then flared one the other way to drive in the run. But they failed to produce a run after a Jake Fraley leadoff double in the 3rd inning. India's grounder moved him to 3rd, but Tyler Naquin struck out and Tommy Pham flew out. The Reds plated two runs in the 4th inning when Colin Moran grounded into a fielder's choice and SS Kim tacked on a throwing error to make it 9-3. Naquin doubled in India to make it 9-4 and Votto's RBI groundout made it 9-5 in the 5th inning. Senzel hit a solo homer in the 9th.

Penwork: Hoffman, Strickland, Diaz, Farmer tossed 6 IN, 0 R. Hoffman did allow his three inherited runners to score. Strickland did walk two batters for his fourth consecutive appearance.

Clean: Rookie Alexis Diaz has not allowed a run in his first seven ML appearances (7.1).

C.I Senzel: Senzel reached by catcher's interference for the 2nd time this season and 8th time in his career. By the way, Pete Rose held the ML record for reaching on CI for a career (29) until 2017, when Jacoby Ellsbury topped his mark.

Play of the night: A father (Jacob Kingsley) caught a foul on the fly, with his bare hand, while seated......and giving his child (Shepherd) a bottle! The look on the face of mom (Jordan) was a combo of excitement/concern......It was priceless.

Down on the Farm:

Louisville RHP Graham Ashcraft 5 IN, 5 H, 1 R, 8 K.

Dayton: '20 5th round pick RHP Joe Boyle teamed with two relievers on a two-hit shutout. Boyle has 22 K in 13.0 innings. Reece Hinds 2 H, HR.
The Dragons have won 9 of 10.
