(Cincinnati, OH) - Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announced Wednesday that no charges will be filed against an officer in the officer-involved shooting in Colerain Township on November 30, 2020.
Deters says North College Hill police officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle driven by 21-year-old Carrington Shropshire. Shropshire allegedly refused to stop the vehicle and led police on a pursuit into Colerain Township. Officer Zach Elston, with the Colerain Township Police Department, picked up the pursuit but the pursuit was terminated due to inclement weather and poor road conditions. Deters says Shropshire continued, wrecking his vehicle into a retaining wall in White Oak.
As Officer Elston and two North College Hill police officers approached the vehicle, Shropshire allegedly pointed a firearm at them. Deters says in defense of himself and the other officers, Officer Elston fired multiple shots at Shropshire, striking him three times. Officers allegedly recovered a loaded Century Arms 9mm handgun from Shropshire.
Shropshire survived the shooting and was indicted for 3 counts of Felonious Assault with firearm specifications, and 1 count of Failure to Comply With an Order or Signal of a Police Officer with firearm specifications. If convicted on all charges, he faces up to 39-51 years in prison.
Deters says “Officer Elston was 100% justified in shooting Shropshire. He is to be commended for his bravery and quick action in protecting his own life and the lives of his brother officers."
