Western and Southern Open 2019: The Finals

We have crowned two new champions at the 2019 Western and Southern Open.

Up first, the ladies took Center Court, as American Madison Keys sought her first Premier 5 Tournament title against 2 time Grandslam champion, Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova. Keys was broken in the 1st game of both sets, and got the break back in the 10th game of both sets. Keys, even when down in the score, always seemed to be in control of the match. Ultimately she would capture her biggest title to date, defeating Kuznetsova 7-5, 7-6 (5).

On the men's side, Russian Daniil Medvedev would seek his first Masters 1000 title, and win his 1st final in 3 tries in 3 weeks. He would be opposed by Belgian David Goffin also playing in his 1st Masters 1000 series final. In a back and forth match Medvedev would finally get the victory that had been eluding him, defeating Goffin 7-6 (3), 6-4.

With Cincinnati finished most top names are looking on to New York where the U.S. Open is set to be played. A few of the men will compete in the 250 tournament being held in Winston Salem, North Carolina, while some of the women will be heading to the Bronx to compete in the WTA event there.

Next years Western and Southern Open will start a little later due to the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo. The tournament will run the week of August 15th-23rd.
