Western and Southern Open 2019: Day 2 Wrap Up

WS Open Draws

Day 2 of the Western and Southern Open saw some dreams dashed, a comeback fall short, and a fan favorite cruise.

Local star Caty McNally kicked off the action on Center Court against Belgian Elise Mertens. The first set was leaning in McNally's favor as she went up a break and lead 5-3. After that trouble set in as McNally would not win another game the rest of the match falling in the first set 5-7. Mertens continued her roll and breezed through the second set taking the match 7-5, 6-0. Mertens will advance to play the 7 seed Elina Svitolina. McNally will continue in the tournament in doubles action when she partners with Alison Riske to take on the duo of Shuko Aoyama and Aleksandra Krunic tomorrow on court 7.

Later on Center Court Andy Murray made his singles return. In his first match since the Australian Open in January, Murray showed signs of court rust and fell to Frenchman Richard Gasquet 4-6, 4-6. After match Murray said while he felt good on the court, he will not play singles at the upcoming US Open in 2 weeks.

Finally on the Grandstand, fan favorite Nick Kyrgios took on Italian Lorenzo Sonego. The two had some fun rallies, to where at one point, Kyrgios stopped the match so his opponent could enjoy a replay. Ultimately Kyrgios proved to be too much for Sonego defeating him 7-5, 6-4.
