Notable Losses in the First Round in Cincinnati

With most of the top seeds winning and moving on to the second, let's take a look at some notable players who will be leaving Cincinnati early this year.

Men’s First Round Wrap Up

The first round of the men’s draw at the Western and Southern Open went about as expected. Most favorites are moving on to the second round.

Among the early exits are just a couple of surprising names.

Andy Murray had a quick exit this, still struggling to come back from his hip injury. It was apparent at times that it was bothering him, and he lack a lot of power on his serves.

Another somewhat surprising early exit was the 9 seed John Isner. The highest seeded American male in the tournament, Isner was paired with Sam Querry in the draw in a match that did not disappoint. Both men possessing big serve this match came down to two tie-breakers with only one serve break in the match.

One of the more surprising losses in round one was the young Greek, Stefanos Tsitsipas. While playing the 11 seeded David Goffin, Tsitsipas was riding a wave of momentum coming out of the Rogers cup over the weekend. It was a surprise when Goffin dispatched of Tsitsipas in straight sets.

Other notable losses in the first round include American Jack Sock, who fell to the Hyeon Chung, and American Frances Tiafoe who had a great 3-set match against Denis Shapovalov.

Men’s second round action begins on Wednesday.


Women’s First Round Wrap Up

Over on the ladies side things were a little more interesting.

The 11 seed Jelena Ostapenko. Up a set she would drop a close second set and never win another game losing to qualifier Alize Cornet.

Another surprising early exit was the Brit Johanna Konta losing in three sets to Aryna Sabalenka.

Other seed to lose include the 10 seed Julia Goerges who retired due to injury. Naomi Osaka, the 17 seed, also fell.

There were a lot of competitive matches in the first round, and some interesting matches to come in the second round. A lot of the big names are still in the draw, and in this next round we see the top seeds come off the bye to start their runs to the title. There will be some good tennis in Mason to look forward to over then next couple of days.
